Overview
We believe that preventative care is one of the most important aspects of maintaining your pet’s health.
When should my pet get vaccinated?
Vaccinations are particularly important for young animals that have immature immune systems. Veterinary vaccinations generally begin at 6-8 weeks of age and then boostered through your pet’s life depending on the vaccine. Our doctors will determine the appropriate vaccination plan for your pet.
How are vaccines administered?
Vaccines help to combat diseases by exposing the pet's immune system to inactive or small amounts of a particular form of bacteria or virus. Vaccinations are accompanied by a consultation and examination with our veterinarian to make certain that your pet's condition is stable enough to receive them. Proper and timely administration is necessary to ensure optimal protection.

Do not withhold water
-
Check-in begins at 7:30 for Dogs and 7:45 for Cats
-
Dogs must wait in your car until check-in is complete
-
Cats must be in a carrier, or a trap and should wait in the car until check-in is complete
-
Pickup time for Dogs 3p, cats 3:30p patients remaining after 4p with no owner present will be charged a $100 late pick up fee.
-
We are a mobile unit and therefore we have a drive through check in.
-
Please remove all towels, blankets, dishes and toys from cat carriers. We also ask you ensure your cat's kennel door is securely locked and all snaps, bolts and zippers are functioning as expected for the safety of your pet (we don't want any escapes as we transport from your car to the mobile unit.) If you find missing clips, bolts or broken carrier pieces, please ask us for zip ties or alert us to the issues. We also ask that all carriers be super clean and dry, your cat will recover post operatively in their carrier and a dirty carrier can increase the risk of post-operative infection.
-
Please be prepared for staff to come to your window to fully check you in. Please ensure all consent forms (sent to your email) have been signed prior to the clinic and submitted to reduce the time it takes to check you in, keeping the flow moving for those waiting to check in behind you.
-
At this time staff will take your pet from the vehicle and to the mobile surgical unit. Due to space, we do not allow clients to access the mobile unit.
Our Commitment
We believe in the power of education, prevention, and compassionate care for every pet.
Our Values
We are committed to community engagement, transparency, and providing affordable services to support the wellbeing of animals and their owners.
Surgical Post Operative Instructions

Surgical After Care Instructions
Aftercare instructions –
E-Collars are highly recommended for all pets.
The first 24 hours post-surgery
-
Allow your pet to recover in a quiet, safe place indoors.
-
Be aware that your pet’s behavior may be slightly altered in the first 24 hours after surgery. For example, they may be glassy-eyed, sleepy, nauseous, wobbly, vocal, shivering, or irritable.
-
Encourage frequent movement indoors to help your pet recover from the anesthesia. Allowing them to rest uninterrupted will result in longer recovery and potential complications.
-
Offer small amounts of the food they eat regularly and water later in the evening. Your pet may feel nauseous, and it can take up to 48 hours for their appetite to return to normal.
-
You may notice your pet received a small green tattoo, indicating they've been sterilized. This tattoo is not an extra incision and does not require cleaning.
The 10-14 days following surgery
-
Your pet should be closely supervised and on an exercise restriction for the next 10-14 days. Dogs should always be leashed when outside during the recovery period, do not leave your dogs unattended outside in the yard. Keep your pet as quiet as possible during the first two weeks. No running, jumping, playing, swimming or other strenuous activity. Strenuous activity increases your pet’s risk of developing swelling around the incision site that could result in premature dissolving of sutures, opening of the incision, and costly medical care that would be your responsibility. For multiple pet households, pets should be kept separated during recovery.
-
Keep the incision dry. No licking, bathing, swimming, or playing in water or snow.
-
Check the incision twice daily until healed.
-
A small amount of blood is normal immediately after surgery.
-
Some redness and swelling of the incision is expected and normal.
-
There are no sutures to be removed.
-
-
Do not allow your pet to lick, scratch, or chew the incision. This introduces bacteria from the pet’s mouth into the incision area and removes the protective layer or glue. If this occurs, an Elizabethan collar (E-collar) must be used to help prevent potentially serious post-operative complications and infections.
-
Male dogs and cats can still impregnate an unsterilized female up to one month after surgery. Please keep a close eye on your pet.
Protecting your pet's incision
Do not allow your pet to lick or chew their incision. Licking can lead to serious complications like the incision opening or becoming infected. This can be painful and may require follow-up visits which could result in unexpected costs.
Recommended: Elizabethan collar (also called an E-collar or cone)
To prevent irritating the incision, we recommend you purchase an Elizabethan collar (E-collar) to keep your pet from being able to reach the area with their mouth. These cone collars are the most effective protection against your pet causing trauma to their incision and should be worn for 10-14 days following surgery.
E-collars can be purchased from us at the time of surgery or at most pet stores. They're only effective if fitted properly. The cone should go past your pet’s nose by two inches. If it's any shorter, they're likely still able to reach their incision.
Alternatives to E-collars
If your pet won't tolerate an E-collar, consider one of the following options:
-
Onesies for female dogs or cats
-
Onesies are bodysuits for infants and can be purchased at any superstore (like Target or Walmart). Typically, onesies are short sleeved and button in the pelvis area.
-
Sizing: Small kittens (four to five pounds) require a newborn size; adult cats or puppies under eight pounds usually wear a size 0-3 months; and larger cats or small dogs usually require a size 3-6 months.
-
To fit: Put the onesie over your pet's head and their front legs through the arm holes. Bring the bottom pieces together like you are going to button them and cut a hole for their tail and backside. Once the hole is made, button the onesie closed. If the neck is loose, you can use a rubber band to bunch the material together.
-
-
Boxer shorts for male dogs
-
To fit: Put your pet’s back legs through the leg holes in the shorts. Their tail will fit through the fly. Rubber band the extra material on top of their back to keep the shorts from coming off. You will either need to cut a hole or take the boxers off when you take them outside to defecate.
-
Normal issues after surgery
These issues should resolve on their own over a few days. Contact us if you see no signs of improvement or things worsen over time.
-
Small amount of bloody discharge from surgical incision
-
Redness or a small amount of swelling or bruising at the site of incision
-
Whining or crying the first night after surgery
-
Decreased energy during the 24 hours following surgery
-
Not urinating or defecating on their normal schedule
-
Open neuter incision (males only) with minor discharge
Issues that require attention, but are not an emergency
Please see your regular veterinarian if your pet experiences the following:
-
Significant swelling at the surgical incision
-
Colored discharge from the incision
-
Pale gums
-
Not returning to eating or drinking days after surgery
-
Intermittent vomiting for days after surgery
-
Slight gaps at the spay incision (females only)
-
Swollen painful scrotum (males only) days after surgery
Recheck exams:
We are happy to see your pet back if there are any complications related to the surgery. Recheck Hours are by appointment only, please email northwestspayneuter@aol.com.
Some common complications are incisional discharge or an open incision, unwillingness to eat, pain and discomfort when their incision is touched.
Emergency issues after surgery:
Please take your pet to a local, 24-hour emergency clinic if you see any of the following:
-
Consistent flow of blood from surgical incision
-
Consistent vomiting that won't stop
-
Difficulty breathing
-
Not waking up or inability to stand
-
The spay incision is completely open (females only)

How do I schedule? All scheduling is done online. You can click the link on the home page or you can use the scheduling tab above. If you have questions please email us at
What time is drop off?
Drop off for dogs is at 7:30am and 7:45am for cats. Please do not ask for an early or late drop off. Our times are set to allow maximum efficiency which helps us minimize pricing.
What time is pick up?
Pick Dogs - 3p and Cats 3:30p. You must pick up by 4pm or you will incur a late pick-up fee of $100, as we have to continue to employ staff to stay with your pet. We will contact you if your pet is ready to go earlier in the day.
How should I prepare for my visit?
Dogs must be contained in your vehicle and cats must be in a carrier.
If your pet is current on their rabies vaccine and you are seeking a 3yr booster, please bring your rabies certificate as proof of the vaccine. Rabies tags are NOT sufficient proof.
Dogs and cats should not have breakfast the morning of surgery.
Please allow time for your dog to go potty prior to drop off.
If your pet has any medical concerns, please email us at Northwestspayneuter@aol.com prior to surgery.
Does Northwest Spay & Neuter offer pre-anesthetic blood work?
Yes: however not required. It is $100 and includes a full CBC and a mini-chemistry panel. Cats also include T4. Needs to be scheduled 2 weeks prior to surgery. Any abnormalities need to be treated with your regular veterinarian.
My pet is in heat, do I need to reschedule?
No! Under the hands of a skilled surgeon, spaying your pet while they are in heat does not carry increased risk. We also do not charge any extra for in-heat pets.
What happens if my pet is pregnant?
Unless very late term (ie. about to give birth/active labor) we are able to safely spay and abort the fetus’ in a pain free humane way. There is no additional charge for spaying a pregnant pet.
How long is the healing time?
For most procedures, the healing time is 14 days. During this time, your pet's activity level should be kept low and your pet should wear an e-collar to prevent licking at the incision site.
Will my pet get a spay/neuter tattoo?
Yes! We require the tattoo as part of our spay/neuter services. Feral cats also receive an ear-tip. The spay/neuter indicator tattoo is a small linear green tattoo in or near the incision site. This indicator tattoo is used to show that the pet has been spayed or neutered. It is a key tool in preventing unnecessary surgeries should your pet ever end up in a rescue or shelter situation.
Will my pet need to come back for a suture removal?
No, the sutures are internal and will dissolve on their own. Do not allow your pet to lick or chew at the incision site. Check daily for any excessive redness, swelling or oozing. Email us at Northwestspayneuter@aol.com if you have concerns about the incision site.
What is the best age to spay/neuter my pet?
We suggest you talk with your full service vet to determine the best timing for YOUR pet's spay or neuter. However, we encourage early-age surgery due to the quicker recovery time of a young pet.
Kittens and puppies should be at least 2 pounds.
What happens if my pet has a complication after surgery?
If you think your pet is having a minor surgical complication such as a small open area, redness, or oozing at the incision site, make sure they are wearing a cone/surgical suit. Please send us an email with a picture of your pet's incision and a description of the problem to Northwestspayneuter@aol.com.
If you think your pet is having a major surgical complication such as tissue coming out of the incision, extreme pain, pale gums, or other things that concern you; please seek emergency veterinary care immediately.
Can my pet get booster vaccines at "The SNip Ship?"
If your pet received surgery with us or attended one of out wellness clinics, then you can schedule booster vaccines anytime within the year of that exam. Please watch the calendar for one of our wellness clinics near you.
My pet is sick, can I schedule an appointment?
We do not offer sick pet care.
What is Northwest Spay & Neuter's policy for refunds/deposits?
Northwest Spay & Neuter does not refund deposits except for in a true medical emergency for the pet or owner. This requires proof or said emergency prior to the appointment. If you cannot make your appointment and give us 5 (Five) days minimum notice, we can either credit the pre-payment to your account for future spay/neuter/wellness services or reschedule your appointment to a later date. Appointments canceled within the 5-day window will be assessed a rescheduling fee of $25. If you no show your appointment, the full amount of the deposit made will be forfeited to our Paws for a Cause account that will help less fortunate animals get surgery in the future.
Why is the cost so much less with Northwest Spay & Neuter's "The SNip Ship," than with my normal veterinarian?
This is a complicated answer with many different causes, but the main reason is that we have very low overhead costs since we do not see appointments or provide anything other than surgery and wellness.
Additionally, we strongly believe that by charging less we can help more pets and what we lose in the cost we make up for in the volume.
Does my pet receive the same care even though the cost is less?
We want to assure you that our procedures are just as safe as they would be with your regular veterinarian. Our doctors have years of focused experience with high volume surgery and because of this they are able to perform the procedures with less time under anesthesia and smaller incision sizes. All pets receive full monitoring.
